What is that curious concrete structure? That, my friends, is Tufsen, a beloved landmark in Stockholm. This isn’t just any sculpture. It was designed in the late 1940s by Egon Møller-Nielsen, a Danish artist who made Sweden his home. Imagine, back then, playgrounds were often stark and unimaginative. Møller-Nielsen wanted something different, something that sparked children’s imaginations. Tufsen, with its smooth curves and inviting nooks, was his answer. He called it a “lekskulptur” – a play sculpture. The first Tufsen was installed in Stockholm in 1949. It was a hit! Soon, more Tufsen sculptures popped up across Sweden. They became symbols of joyful play. The name “Tufsen,” you ask? It was the nickname of Møller-Nielsen’s daughter, Mona. So, next time you see a Tufsen, remember the artist who saw the extraordinary in the ordinary and brought a little magic to children’s play.
