Transformation is the name of the game here at Tuen Mun Treatment Works. This isn’t just any ordinary plant. Tuen Mun Treatment Works is transforming Hong Kong’s waste management. It’s a vital part of Hong Kong’s ambitious policy to improve waste recovery.

Tuen Mun Treatment Works, also known as T PARK, stands for transformation. The plant processes sludge from eleven sewage treatment plants. This serves over 7 million inhabitants.

Designed by French architectural firm Claude Vasconi, Tuen Mun Treatment Works blends into the landscape. Its curves mimic the waves and hills overlooking Deep Bay. It’s hard to believe it’s a sludge treatment plant.

With a maximum treatment capacity of 2,000 metric tons of sewage sludge per day, Tuen Mun Treatment Works is the largest of its kind. It uses advanced tech. This tech reduces waste by 90%. This substantially reduces the volume of sewage sludge for disposal.

The heat generated during this process is transformed into electricity. Tuen Mun Treatment Works produces 14 MW of power. This supplies the entire site. The surplus goes to the public grid. When running at full capacity, it can power 4,000 homes.

Tuen Mun Treatment Works is also self-sufficient in water. A desalination plant purifies seawater. It meets the site’s water needs providing up to 600 m3 per day. Rainwater is also recovered. The facility achieves zero effluent discharge into the sea. A small wastewater treatment plant collects processes and reuses the wastewater.

But it’s not just a plant. Tuen Mun Treatment Works combines advanced technologies. It also has ecological leisure facilities and educational activities. These highlight the benefits of a circular approach to waste management. This approach is based on energy recovery.

Seventy percent of the site is green spaces and water. It includes an interactive exhibition space focusing on sludge treatment. There is a landscaped ecological garden, home to local biodiversity. You might spot grebes, kingfishers, water hens, dragonflies and amphibians.

There is even a theater, food court and spa with three pools. These pools are heated by the heat recovered during sludge incineration. A terrace overlooks Deep Bay and Shenzhen.

Tuen Mun Treatment Works exemplifies how we can transform waste. It shows how we can create energy and conserve resources while educating the public. It is a model for sustainable waste management. Tuen Mun Treatment Works is open to the public for visits. Make a reservation through their official website beforehand. You can see the facilities through the glass. It is a very educational place.
