What whispers do the stones of the Tuchmacherbrunnen hold? Here, nestled among the bustling streets of Vienna’s Innere Stadt, stands the Tuchmacherbrunnen, also known as the Tuchlaubenbrunnen. This fountain isn’t just a place for a refreshing sip of water. It’s a monument to time, a tribute to the city’s rich history. The Tuchmacherbrunnen was unveiled on June 7, 1928. It commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Wiener Wechselseitige Versicherung (Vienna Mutual Insurance). Their headquarters stood proudly on this very spot, at Tuchlauben 8. Look closely at the bronze figure at the heart of the fountain, sculpted by Oskar Thiede. This isn’t just an artistic flourish. It represents the cloth makers, the Tuchmacher, who once plied their trade in this area. The Erzgießerei A.G. cast the figure. The pedestal, basin, and central column are crafted from Lindabrunner conglomerate, a testament to local craftsmanship. Two bronze plaques adorn the central column. One tells of the “Schöne Brunnen” (Beautiful Fountain) which graced this location from 1436 until the late 18th century. This older fountain even lent its name to the building at Tuchlauben 8, which was known as the “Schönbrunnerhaus.” The second plaque commemorates the insurance company’s anniversary and the mayor at the time of the fountain’s unveiling, Karl Seitz. The Tuchmacherbrunnen stands as a tangible link between Vienna’s past and present, a beautiful echo of the city’s vibrant history.
