The scent of the sea hangs heavy in the air. This is Tsukiji Fish Market. Before you stands a vibrant tapestry of sights and smells. A legacy of over eighty years of history unfolds.

Tsukiji Fish Market once held the title of the world’s largest wholesale fish and seafood market. It opened in 1935. This was after the Great Kanto earthquake destroyed the old Nihonbashi market. The land itself a testament to human ingenuity. It was reclaimed from Tokyo Bay during the Edo period. The name Tsukiji literally means “constructed land”.

The inner market was a hive of activity. Licensed wholesalers operated small stalls. Here the famous tuna auctions took place. The outer market was a different scene. It was a lively mix of wholesale and retail shops. It offered everything from kitchen knives to groceries. Many restaurants thrived here too especially sushi restaurants. Most shops closed by early afternoon. Only a limited number of visitors were allowed into the inner market. This was usually after 10 am to witness the tuna auction.

The market handled an incredible amount of seafood. Over 480 kinds of seafood passed through its hands. There was also 270 types of produce. This ranged from inexpensive seaweed to the most expensive caviar. The sheer volume was staggering. Over 700000 metric tons of seafood were handled annually. The market’s economic impact was huge.

The daily operations were a spectacle. Trucks and ships arrived before dawn delivering fresh catches. The auctioneers expertly estimated the value of each fish. Buyers inspected the fish before bidding commenced. The process was a blend of ancient tradition and modern efficiency. Massive tuna were cut with meter long knives. The skill and precision of the fishmongers were remarkable.

The market’s popularity led to overcrowding. At times tourists were banned from the tuna auctions. This was due to disruption and congestion. Eventually a limit of 120 visitors per day was implemented. The inner market eventually moved to Toyosu Market in 2018. The outer market however remains a vibrant testament to Tsukiji’s legacy. It is a place where history culinary excellence and the energy of Tokyo blend seamlessly. The old Tsukiji will be redeveloped but the spirit remains. The outer market continues to draw visitors and locals alike. They come to taste the freshest seafood and experience the unique atmosphere. Tsukiji Fish Market a place where the past present and future intertwine.
