Built in 1993, Tsuen Wan Public Library stands as a testament to the power of knowledge and community. This library wasn’t the first in Tsuen Wan. The original Tsuen Wan Public Library resided on the ground floor of Wing Hong House in Fuk Loi Estate. It held the distinction of being the first public library in the New Territories. This was a significant milestone during a period of rapid growth for the Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung area. Fast forward to today. You now stand before the current Tsuen Wan Public Library. It’s part of a larger complex, sharing space with the Tsuen Wan Government Offices. This building project, costing HK$258 million, began in 1990. Upon its opening, the Tsuen Wan Public Library became the largest public library in Hong Kong. It was officially inaugurated on July 23, 1993, by Governor Chris Patten. He emphasized the vital role of libraries as a “community service”. Tsuen Wan Public Library quickly became a beloved hub. By 1997, it was one of the two most frequented libraries in Hong Kong, alongside Sha Tin Central Library. The library occupies three floors, boasting a spacious 3,000 square meters. It houses a diverse range of resources. These include an adult library, a children’s library, a reference library, and a multimedia library. There’s also a newspapers and periodicals section, a computer and information centre, a student study room, and an extension activities room. Tsuen Wan Public Library also curates two unique collections. One focuses on the local history and culture of Tsuen Wan District. The other, known as the “Modern Living Collection,” offers resources on home design and maintenance. Even now, Tsuen Wan Public Library continues to evolve. There are plans for expansion and renovation. This project aims to enhance the existing three floors. It also seeks to expand the library into two additional floors currently used for offices. This ongoing dedication to improvement ensures that Tsuen Wan Public Library remains a vibrant centre for learning and community engagement.
