Founded in 1977 Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College stands proudly. It’s a testament to the vision of Ho Chuen-yiu. He was a prominent Tsuen Wan businessman and community leader. He established the Tsuen Wan Rural Committee. He also served two terms as chairman of the Heung Yee Kuk. The college bears his name a fitting tribute to his legacy.
The college opened its doors in 1977. It quickly became a cornerstone of the community. It moved to its present location in Shek Wai Kok Estate in 1978. This was a significant move. It provided the growing school with much-needed space and modern facilities.
The handover of Hong Kong in 1997 presented challenges. The Hong Kong government announced that Chinese would be the default language of instruction. Many English-medium instruction schools faced closure. Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College however was one of the few allowed to continue its English-medium program. This is a testament to its academic reputation and commitment to bilingual education.
In 2019 the college found itself at the center of a national conversation. A student Tsang Chi-kin was shot by police during the 2019-20 Hong Kong protests. This event sparked widespread protests and international attention. The college’s decision not to expel Tsang despite pressure from Chinese authorities garnered both praise and criticism. It highlighted the ongoing tensions between local identity and national interests.
Today Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College remains a vibrant institution. It boasts a computer-assisted learning center. It also has a computerized music room and art room. All classrooms are equipped with computers and projectors. Every room is air-conditioned. The school also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities. Four houses – Integrity Elegance Loyalty and Benevolence – foster school spirit and competition. Numerous clubs cater to academic service sports and other interests.
