“Where exactly was Tsing Leng Tsui?” I hear you ask. Tsing Leng Tsui is a former cape on Tsing Yi Island in Hong Kong. It sat between the former Tsing Yi Bay and the Rambler Channel.
Let’s talk about how this cape has transformed over time. After several phases of reclamation, Tsing Leng Tsui lost its original shape. This area then became home to the Hong Kong Cement Plant. It belonged to the Hong Kong Cement Manufacturing Company Limited.
But that is not the end of the story of Tsing Leng Tsui. Environmental concerns arose from residents of the nearby Greenfield Garden. This led to the plant’s relocation to Ngau Kok Wan. Ngau Kok Wan is northwest of the island.
What happened to the area after the cement plant left Tsing Leng Tsui? It was transformed into a promenade. Also the Grand Horizon residential estate was built here.
Now, let’s rewind a bit to understand the broader context. Tsing Yi Bay, which once bordered Tsing Leng Tsui, has also undergone significant changes. This bay was on the east side of Tsing Yi Island. It sat beside the Rambler Channel. The entire bay was reclaimed for new town development.
Before reclamation, Tsing Yi Bay was surrounded by places like Tsing Leng Tsui. Other places included Sheung Ko Tan, Ha Chung Mei, Tai Wong Ha and Tsing Yi Town. These names have evolved over time. Today, they are known as Grand Horizon, Green Field Garden, Fung Shue Wo Road, Tsing Yi Estate and Tsing Yi Garden.
In the 1980s, the Hong Kong Government began reclaiming the bay in three phases. The shore was straightened from Nga Ying Chau to Tsing Leng Tsui.
