Here at Tsam Chuk Wan, let me tell you a tale. It is a story of missionaries, Hakka villagers, and a bay dotted with islands. Tsam Chuk Wan. This bay on the Sai Kung Peninsula holds more history than meets the eye.

Tsam Chuk Wan is not just a bay. It’s also the name of the surrounding area. Tsam Chuk Wan Village sits nestled within it.

Let us journey back to the 19th century. Between 1867 and 1869, Catholic missionaries established a station here. Imagine their arrival. They sought to spread their faith in this remote corner of Hong Kong.

In 1911, Pak Tam Chung was nearby. It consisted of six villages. These villages included Tsam Chuk Wan. The population of Tsam Chuk Wan Village was just 74. A small community living a simple life.

Most villagers were Hakka people. These hardy people had a unique culture. They farmed the land and fished the sea.

Even in the 1950s, Tsam Chuk Wan remained small. Its population was around 55. Austin Coates and James W Hayes documented this. They were district officers who studied rural Hong Kong.

Tsam Chuk Wan is surrounded by islands. Muk Yue Chau sits in the bay. Ching Chau rises from the water. Nga Ying Chau and Wong Nai Chau Tsai dot the seascape. Wong Yi Chau completes the island chain.

Today, Tsam Chuk Wan offers more than just scenic views. The Memorial Monument of Sai Kung Martyrs of World War II stands as a solemn reminder. It honors those who lost their lives during the war. The monument was unveiled in 1989.

The Hong Kong Sea Cadet Corps Tang Shiu Kin Nautical Centre teaches nautical skills. Young people learn to sail and navigate. Queen Elizabeth School Camp offers outdoor education. Students connect with nature.

The New Territories Small House Policy recognizes Tsam Chuk Wan Village. This policy grants building rights to indigenous villagers. Wong Keng Tei Tin Hau Temple overlooks the bay. Locals also call it Tsam Chuk Wan Tin Hau Temple.

Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung Camp provides recreational facilities. Families and groups enjoy outdoor activities here. Sheung Yiu Folk Museum showcases local heritage. It is housed in Sheung Yiu Village.

Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows Chapel stands as a testament to faith. It was built in 1900. Italian missionaries established Hakka congregations here.

Tsam Chuk Wan has seen many changes. It has transformed from a remote village to a place of remembrance. It is now a center for education and recreation. Yet, the beauty of the bay remains. The islands still stand guard.

So, as you gaze upon Tsam Chuk Wan remember its layers of history. Missionaries. Villagers. War heroes. Students. They all have shaped this special place. Their stories echo in the gentle lapping of the waves.
