Imagine a swamp transformed into a vibrant sporting hub. That’s Trumper Park. This park is more than just green space. It’s a place steeped in history and community spirit.
Trumper Park Oval sits at the corner of Glenmore Road and Hampden Street in Paddington. It proudly carries the name of Victor Trumper, a local cricketing legend. The park has hosted Australian Football since at least 1903. This was even before the first rugby league competition in Australia.
Originally, Trumper Park was called Hampden Park Oval. This ground had humble beginnings. It was built on a reclaimed swamp, an old quarry, and even a garbage dump. Imagine the effort. They had to build it up by 13 feet in some areas. This was all to create a suitable cricket oval.
The park’s original name honored Viscount Hampden. He was the Governor of New South Wales from 1895 to 1899. Interestingly, Hampden Street was initially named Ebenezer Street.
Local legend says Paddington’s first three inhabitants built a gin distillery near today’s Trumper Park. Teams transporting gin along Oxford Street faced a challenging route. They navigated trees, sandstone outcrops, and swampy patches. The easiest path became Glenmore Road.
The opening of Trumper Park was a true community celebration. Local businesses donated produce, meat, bread, and jams. A bullock was roasted whole. There were games. A fancy dress cricket match took place. Victor Trumper even participated.
In 1931, the park’s name changed to Trumper Park. This honored Victor Trumper, a cricketing hero who lived from 1877 to 1915. The Eastern Suburbs Roosters played several games at Trumper Oval.
Today, Trumper Park is home to various sporting groups. These include the UTS Australian Football Club. You’ll also find the Eastern Suburbs Juniors and the Eastern Suburbs Little Athletics here. The Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club and Wentworth Tennis also call this park home.
The Frank Dixon grandstand stands within Trumper Park. Originally built in 1936, it was later reduced in size. This reflects the park’s current usage.
Wentworth Tennis operates at Trumper Park Tennis Centre. The centre was once known as “The Palms”. They offer programs for children and adults. The tennis centre boasts eight sand-filled artificial grass courts.
Trumper Park is conveniently located. It’s a short drive from Sydney CBD. It’s also a brief walk from Edgecliff train station. The iconic Lord Dudley Hotel is nearby.
