In 1973, a beacon of knowledge and empowerment arose in the bustling heart of Kowloon. True Light Girls’ College, or TLGC as it’s affectionately known, opened its doors. This wasn’t just another school. It was a tribute to a century of True Light education, a legacy ignited by the remarkable Harriet Newell Noyes. True Light Girls’ College stands as a testament to her vision. Noyes, an American missionary, arrived in Canton in 1867. She was just 23 years old. Appalled by the lack of educational opportunities for girls, she established the first True Light Middle School in 1872. Now, fast forward to 1973, and True Light Girls’ College continues that mission in Hong Kong. The school, managed by the Kowloon True Light Middle School Management Board, partnered with the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China. They established a school that not only prioritized academics but also nurtured character and faith. The motto, “Thou art the Light of the World,” speaks volumes about their commitment. True Light Girls’ College is an aided EMI school. This means it receives government funding while teaching primarily in English. It’s a unique blend of public support and focused learning. As you stand before the school, imagine the vibrant energy within. Picture the girls in their distinctive cheongsams. True Light Girls’ College was the first secondary school in Hong Kong to adopt this traditional garment as its uniform. It’s a symbol of their heritage and a connection to the past. The school has constantly evolved to meet the needs of a changing world. A new annex, completed in 2005, expanded the campus. It provided more classrooms and special rooms. This brought the total to 24 classrooms, along with 16 special rooms, a hall, a covered playground, a library, and various sports facilities. More recently, a Student TV station, a School History Gallery, and an E-learning Centre were added. These additions demonstrate the school’s dedication to providing a well-rounded education. True Light Girls’ College boasts a dedicated teaching staff of 46. Many hold advanced degrees. This faculty nurtures the minds of girls from Secondary 1 to Secondary 6. The school’s success stories are numerous. One notable alumna is G.E.M., the famous Hong Kong pop singer, who graduated in 2008. True Light Girls’ College has empowered countless young women. They provided them with the tools to succeed in a competitive world. As we leave True Light Girls’ College, remember the legacy of Harriet Newell Noyes. Her vision continues to illuminate the lives of young women in Hong Kong. Her light shines brightly within these walls. It guides future generations towards a brighter future.
