Is this water always so calm? It looks peaceful today. Trout Lake seems almost untouched by the city. Don’t let the tranquility fool you. This lake is a survivor, a testament to Vancouver’s ever-changing landscape. You see, Trout Lake isn’t its original name. This tranquil oasis was once a bustling hub for one of Vancouver’s first industries: lumber. In the late 19th century, this lake was the beating heart of the Hastings Sawmill. The sawmill was owned by a prominent figure, John Hendry. He was a man of many titles: President of the Vancouver Board of Trade, President of the Canadian Forestry Association, and even Mayor of New Westminster. When Hendry passed away in 1916, his daughter, Aldene Hamber, inherited the land. She had a vision for this place, a future far removed from smokestacks and timber. Instead of seeing it turned into a municipal dump, she made a generous donation to the city in 1926. Her only condition? That this green expanse be named in honor of her father: John Hendry Park. The name stuck, but locals, drawn to its natural beauty, fondly began calling it Trout Lake.
