Amongst the windswept pines of Trollskogen a unique story unfolds. Trollskogen meaning “enchanted forest” or “troll’s forest” is a true nature reserve. It lies on a promontory in the northeast corner of the Baltic island Oland Sweden. The 100-hectare reserve boasts a unique ecology. Many rare plants thrive here. They are not found anywhere else.
The landscape is a mix of contrasts. The exposed shingle beach on the eastern side bears witness to the relentless Baltic Sea. The western side offers a sheltered bay the peaceful Grankullaviken. The forest itself is a tapestry woven from time. Lichen-covered pines twist towards the sky deformed by the wind. Older trees stand tall. Some are over 200 years old. These ancient pines share their space with old oaks remnants of former grazing pastures. Even today cattle graze in Trollskogen maintaining the biodiversity. The western edge gently melts into the grazed and forested areas of Grankullaviken bay.
This rich ecosystem supports a remarkable array of life. Lichens insects fungi and mosses find haven amongst the old oaks and pines. Rare and endangered species including Pachyphiale carneola Calicium abietinum and Sphinctrina call Trollskogen home. More common plants such as burr chervil Prince’s pine and Baltic wormwood add to the vibrant tapestry.
The history of Trollskogen is as captivating as its present. Fifteen cairns and stone circles bear silent testimony to early human presence. Grankullavik once called Orboviken served as a significant naval base in the 15th century. It controlled much of the central Baltic Sea. Remnants of fortifications still stand on the east and west sides. A stone wall possibly a hunting domain boundary remains. It dates back to King John III’s reign from 1537 to 1592.
A maritime tragedy also etched itself into the history of Trollskogen. The Swiks a schooner wrecked on the coast on December 21 1926. Its seven-man crew escaped. The wreck remains visible today a poignant reminder of the sea’s power.
Trollskogen offers visitors a chance to explore this unique landscape. Three hiking trails with signage are available. One is even stroller-accessible. A nature center near the parking area provides further information.
