Nestled in the heart of Takoma Park, Trinity Presbyterian Church has witnessed the ebb and flow of history since its inception in 1887. It all began with Reverend James C. Dorsey, a former missionary, who opened his home for the first Episcopal service. As the community grew, so did the need for a larger space. Services moved from house to house, then to Birch Hall, and later to Union Chapel. Finally, thanks to Mrs. L. S. Thornton’s generosity, land was secured for a permanent home. Takoma Parish, the church’s original name, held its first service in its new building on November 26, 1893. Trinity Presbyterian Church’s first sanctuary housed sacred objects salvaged from a demolished church in Northwest D.C. In 1896, Reverend George H. Johnson became Trinity Presbyterian Church’s first rector. A new chapter began in 1936. A building campaign was launched to replace the aging structure. The cornerstone was laid on June 14, 1936. The new Trinity Presbyterian Church opened its doors on March 7, 1937. The church faced a $16,000 debt. The ingenious solution? The Joash Service. This tradition continued, steadily chipping away at the debt until it was finally paid off in 1943. The remaining $500 was wisely invested in a war bond, the seed money for a future Parish Hall. The rectory was completed in 1941. Joash Sunday was revived to fund the expansion of the Parish Hall, completed in 1950. The 1960s brought significant social shifts. Trinity Presbyterian Church’s congregation transformed, reflecting the changing demographics of the neighborhood. The church transitioned from a predominantly white congregation to a predominantly African American one. Under its current rector, Trinity Presbyterian Church has broadened its community outreach, adding programs like House Church, Advent Circle, the Trinity Education Arts Music Ministry (TEAMM), and support for the homeless. Today, Trinity Presbyterian Church stands as a vibrant tapestry of cultures and countries, welcoming all who seek a spiritual home.
