Eight hundred acres of shimmering water. That’s Triadelphia Reservoir. It stretches before us a vast expanse reflecting the sky. This wasn’t always a lake. Before 1943 the Patuxent River flowed freely here. Then came the Brighton Dam. The dam transformed the river into the reservoir we see today.
Triadelphia Reservoir’s history goes much further back. Long before the dam long before the town of Triadelphia itself. Archaeological surveys in the 1980s revealed evidence of prehistoric Native American settlements. These settlements thrived in the Patuxent River valley. The land was once part of a 1725 land grant surveyed by Benjamin Gaither.
The town of Triadelphia itself a story of its own. Founded in 1809 by three Quaker brothers-in-law. Isaac Briggs Thomas Moore and Revolutionary veteran Caleb Bentley. They built a small town here. Nine houses a sawmill a general store a grist mill even a mill race. It was a bustling community. The Triadelphia Cotton Factory thrived. It grew to several dozen buildings. Sadly a flood in 1868 devastated the town. A second flood finished the job. By 1905 Triadelphia was largely abandoned.
The reservoir isn’t just a source of drinking water for the Washington DC area. It’s a recreational haven. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission manages the area. They provide access for hiking picnicking fishing and boating. Permits are required for boating. Only self-powered or battery-powered vessels are allowed. Remember that.
The Azalea Garden at Brighton Dam a hidden gem. Established in 1959 it boasts over 20000 azaleas. These bloom each May creating a spectacular display. Kousa dogwood trees were added later. This is nationally known. People travel from across the country to witness this beauty.
There’s much more to explore. The different access points like Pigtail Big Branch and Greenbridge each offer unique views and birding opportunities. The reservoir is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Over 240 bird species have been reported here. Bald eagles are especially abundant during winter.
