Could a building whisper secrets? Trčkovský Palace certainly could. This grand palace, nestled in Prague’s Hradčany district, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. It stands proudly on Pohořelec, near the intersection of Loretánská and Úvoz streets. Trčkovský Palace, sometimes referred to as Trauttmansdorff Palace, has a story etched in its very stones.

Trčkovský Palace wasn’t always a palace. It began as a sprawling, multi-building complex constructed between 1622 and 1625. The Trčka of Lípa family commissioned the original structure, leaving their mark on this corner of Prague. The palace later underwent renovations during the early Baroque period, between 1660 and 1663, under the ownership of the Trauttmansdorff family. Interestingly, remnants of a Gothic wall, possibly part of the old Hradčany fortifications, are still embedded within the palace walls. Imagine the stories those ancient stones could tell.

The main facade of Trčkovský Palace is a captivating blend of architectural styles. It features a one-story, four-axis facade. The central two-axis section culminates in a gable with volutes. A striking bossed stone portal marks the entrance, flanked by two smaller stone portals. The side facade facing Loretánská Street has one story and 16 axes, with four gable dormers rising from the attic. A charming arcade with eight uneven arches graces the ground floor. The other side facade, facing Úvoz Street, varies in height, transitioning from two stories near Pohořelec to three stories further down the street. This facade boasts fourteen axes and two polygonal bay windows. A rectangular stone-framed entrance welcomes visitors on the ground floor.

Trčkovský Palace has housed some notable figures. The renowned Czech writer Mikoláš Aleš called this palace home from 1885 to 1886. Perhaps he drew inspiration from the palace’s rich history and elegant architecture. Today, Trčkovský Palace continues to play a vital role in Czech society, serving as offices for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Trčkovský Palace stands as a testament to Prague’s enduring spirit, a silent storyteller in the heart of Hradčany.
