“Per Angusta Ad Augusta” declares the motto etched above the entrance. It means “Through Difficulty To Success”. This motto encapsulates the spirit of Trafalgar High School.

Welcome to Trafalgar High School. It stands as a beacon of hope and resilience in Cape Town’s District Six. This school has a rich history. It played a pivotal role in the struggle against apartheid.

Trafalgar High School was founded in 1912. Dr. Abdullah Abdurahman, president of the African Political Organization, championed its creation. He was also a Cape Town councillor. His advocacy led to the establishment of the school. It was a co-educational institution for coloured people.

Harold Cressy became the first principal. He was the first person of colour to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in South Africa. His leadership set a strong foundation for the school’s commitment to education and social responsibility. The school was first known as the Trafalgar Second Class Public School. It started in Chapel Street in District Six.

In its early years, Trafalgar High School faced many challenges. It had limited resources and opposition from the authorities. Yet, it persevered. The school quickly gained a reputation for academic excellence. It also fostered a strong sense of community.

One notable early success was Rosie Waradea Abdurahman. She was Dr. Abdurahman’s daughter. In 1913, she became the first coloured female student to pass the “School Higher” exam. This achievement highlighted the school’s dedication to empowering its students.

During the apartheid era, Trafalgar High School became a symbol of resistance. The school took a leading role in protesting against the state’s apartheid policies. Teachers and students alike stood up against injustice.

In 1966, the government declared District Six a white area under the Group Areas Act. Thousands of residents were forcibly removed. There were plans to relocate Trafalgar High School. But the school community refused to move. They were determined to preserve their history and legacy.

Despite the forced removals and the challenges of apartheid, Trafalgar High School continued to thrive. Students travelled long distances to attend. The school maintained high pass rates. It nurtured generations of leaders and activists.

Many notable figures have passed through Trafalgar’s halls. These alumni include Dullah Omar, the first Justice Minister of democratic South Africa. Siraj Desai became a judge. Alex La Guma was an acclaimed writer. Abdullah Ibrahim, also known as Dollar Brand, became a world-renowned musician. Cissy Gool and Rahima Moosa were political activists.

In 2006, Trafalgar High School served as the athletes’ village for the Homeless World Cup. In 2011, the school hosted discussions about the redevelopment of District Six. These events demonstrate the school’s ongoing commitment to the community.

Today, Trafalgar High School stands as a testament to the power of education. It is a symbol of resilience. It was declared a national heritage site in April 2023. The school continues to inspire students to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential. The school’s song celebrates its students as Trafalgarians.

As you stand here, consider the countless stories. They are woven into the very fabric of Trafalgar High School. Feel the echoes of those who fought for justice and equality. Remember their motto: “Per Angusta Ad Augusta”.
