Dare to enter the shadow of the Tower of Terror. Looming over Tokyo DisneySea’s American Waterfront it’s a sight to behold. This isn’t just any hotel. It’s Hotel Hightower. A place steeped in mystery and whispers of a curse.
Our story begins not with a ghostly wail but with a boast. Harrison Hightower III a wealthy adventurer and the hotel’s owner was a man who reveled in his exploits. He plundered artifacts from around the world. His most prized possession a cursed idol named Shiriki Utundu.
Hightower scoffed at the idol’s curse. He showed disrespect. On New Year’s Eve 1899 he mocked it using its head to extinguish his cigar. Moments later as he ascended in the elevator the idol awakened. The elevator plummeted. Only Hightower’s hat and the idol were ever found.
The hotel was abandoned condemned a chilling testament to his hubris. Decades later the New York Preservation Society reopened it. They offer tours. You are about to embark on one such tour.
As you enter the lobby opulent yet eerily silent you feel a prickling sensation. You see the wreckage of the elevator Hightower last rode. A cast member recounts the tale of his arrogance and the idol’s wrath. Then you step into Hightower’s office.
The room is filled with his trophies. A stained-glass window depicts Hightower’s triumph. Suddenly the image shifts. Hightower’s face is contorted with fear. His voice echoes his last desperate pleas.
The lights plunge into darkness. Shiriki Utundu’s eyes glow menacingly. You’re ushered into a waiting elevator. The doors close. You ascend. The idol’s laughter is the last thing you hear before the plunge begins.
The elevator drops. You are thrown around. The doors open briefly offering a terrifying view of the park far below. Then another drop and another. You are tossed in the darkness. The experience is intense. It is designed to be thrilling. But remember the tale of Hightower III.
Finally the elevator lurches to a halt. The doors open to reveal the basement. Hightower’s ghostly warning reverberates around you. You emerge shaken but alive a testament to the enduring power of the curse. You have faced the Tower of Terror and lived to tell the tale.
