“What’s with the fancy name for a tiny village?”, you might ask when you first hear about Toskánska. Well, Toskánska, also known as “Tuscan”, might sound like a misplaced Italian villa. But it’s actually a remnant of a bygone era, a small hamlet nestled within the very heart of Prague. You see, back in the 19th century, a particular style of typeface took the printing world by storm. This typeface, with its elegant serifs and bold yet subtle design, was dubbed “Tuscan” by the English printing house of Vincent Figgins. Although completely unrelated to Italy, the name stuck, and somehow, it found its way to this little corner of Prague. Why? Nobody knows for sure. Some say it’s because of a printer who lived here, a man so enamored by the typeface that he christened his own little haven “Toskánska.” Whatever the reason, the name persists, a charming whisper of a time when typefaces were celebrated and every detail in print held a certain magic. Toskánska today, though swallowed by the city’s growth, still retains a quaint charm.
