“Manga and anime are the representative cultures of Japan” once said someone and it couldn’t be truer. Here at the Toshima City Local Museum, we celebrate a pivotal piece of that cultural history. This isn’t just any museum it’s a portal to the past.

The Toshima City Local Museum focuses on Tokiwaso. Tokiwaso was a humble two-story apartment. It became the heart of manga innovation.

Imagine a small wooden building constructed in 1952 shortly after World War II. This was Tokiwaso. Sadly, the original building was demolished in 1982 due to age. A small monument marked the spot for years.

But the story doesn’t end there. Local citizens rallied to restore Tokiwaso. Their love for manga and its history fueled their efforts. After much dedication and many donations, the Toshima City Local Museum opened on July 7, 2020.

Stepping inside the Toshima City Local Museum is like stepping back in time. The reconstruction is incredibly detailed. Every aspect is reproduced to mirror the original Tokiwaso.

The museum’s curators and art teams meticulously recreated the atmosphere. They used records and interviews with former residents to guide their work. Details like rusted metal and faded walls bring the past to life.

One notable story involves George Yamauchi. He moved to Tokyo wearing his school uniform. The museum even hangs a uniform in his recreated room. This shows how dedicated they were to capturing the era.

Here, young manga artists lived and worked. They created famous works in these very rooms. Even the view from the windows is designed to evoke the past.

Osamu Tezuka lived here. He is known for “Astro Boy”, “Kimba the White Lion”, “Black Jack”, and “Phoenix”. Almost all Japanese manga artists and animators respect him.

Other famous residents included Fujiko Fujio A, Fujiko F. Fujio, Shotaro Ishinomori and Fujio Akatsuka. Each artist brought their unique talent and dreams to Tokiwaso.

Don’t miss the special exhibitions on the second floor. These exhibits often display valuable manuscripts. One such exhibition was “Tokiwaso and Tezuka Osamu: The Time of Kimba the White Lion”. It showcased Tezuka’s precious handwritten manuscripts.

The Toshima City Local Museum serves as a time capsule. It evokes a sense of nostalgia for visitors. The community embraces and loves this unique museum.

Walk along Tokiwaso-dori outside the museum. You can follow in the footsteps of the manga artists who once called this neighborhood home.

Before leaving, remember the communal kitchen. Fujio Akatsuka and Shotaro Ishinomori apparently bathed in the sink. There was also a Japanese Chinese restaurant called “Matsuba” nearby. The artists often ate ramen there. You can still visit the shop today.

The Toshima City Local Museum is more than just a museum. It is a tribute to the power of dreams, community, and the enduring legacy of manga. Take a moment to reflect on the journey of these artists. Consider how their shared experiences shaped a cultural phenomenon.
