In 1931, a beacon of Art Deco elegance arose on Bay Street: the Toronto Coach Terminal. This wasn’t just a bus station. It was a gateway, a bustling hub connecting Toronto to countless destinations. Imagine stepping through its grand entrance in its heyday. The ticket hall buzzed with anticipation. Travelers clutched their tickets, eager to embark on journeys across Ontario and beyond. The Toronto Coach Terminal witnessed a constant flow of humanity. Families embarking on holidays, business travelers rushing to meetings, and students returning home. The air hummed with the rumble of arriving and departing buses. The original terminal, known then as the Gray Coach Terminal, had just five platforms. It later expanded to nine platforms and eventually to seven, each accommodating two buses. The terminal even had its own annex, the Elizabeth Street Terminal, built in 1968. This annex handled charters, sightseeing tours, and even GO Transit buses for a time. Interestingly, the annex eventually became solely an arrival point. Passengers departing from the main terminal would arrive across the street at the Elizabeth Street Terminal, a rather unconventional setup. In 1990, the Toronto Coach Terminal underwent a major renovation. The interior was transformed. A glass wall replaced the solid wall separating the waiting area from the bus bays, creating a more open and airy space. The old lunch counter was replaced with a spacious upstairs restaurant. Sadly, it didn’t last, eventually becoming office space. However, a new amenity emerged from this renovation: a tunnel connecting the terminal to the PATH network and Dundas subway station. This provided a convenient, weather-protected link to the city’s underground pedestrian system. For almost 90 years, the Toronto Coach Terminal served as a vital transportation hub. It bore witness to countless journeys and countless stories. Its closure in 2021 marked the end of an era. The buses now depart from Union Station Bus Terminal. But the legacy of the Toronto Coach Terminal, etched in its Art Deco facade, remains a testament to Toronto’s rich transportation history.
