Toronto Baptist Church. A beacon of faith and resilience. A cornerstone for Toronto’s Black community. The story of Toronto Baptist Church begins in 1826. A time when freedom was a dream for many. It was founded by Elder Washington Christian and twelve courageous individuals. These individuals were runaway slaves. They had escaped north via the Underground Railroad. They sought refuge and opportunity in Canada. Toronto Baptist Church is recognized as the first Black institution in Toronto.

These founders envisioned a church that would serve as a pillar of strength. A place of hope. A sanctuary for their community. They faced adversity. They encountered racism. Yet, their faith and determination never wavered. Toronto Baptist Church became a testament to their resilience. It stands as a symbol of their unwavering spirit.

Initially, the church was known as Queen Street Baptist Church. Later, it relocated to University Avenue in 1905. Fifty years later, it found its present home at the corner of D’Arcy and Huron Streets. Over the years, the church’s affiliation shifted. It was associated at times with the Amherstburg Association. But eventually rejoined the Toronto Association in the 1960s.

Today, Toronto Baptist Church continues to thrive. It builds upon the legacy of its founders. Every February, the church celebrates Black History Month. The church commemorates this significant occasion with special events. There are guest speakers and youth performances. They honor the struggles and triumphs of their ancestors.

Within the church, there’s a Heritage Room. This room houses a treasure trove of historical accounts. There are photographs and artifacts. These items provide glimpses into the church’s rich past. Visitors can delve deeper into its history. Learn about the people who shaped its journey. If you wish to explore this room, contact the church. You can email or call them at 416-977-3508 to arrange a visit. Toronto Baptist Church continues to be a vibrant community. Welcoming all who seek spiritual guidance and fellowship. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith.
