On a remote, tranquil hillside of Lantau Island sits the Tong Fuk Correctional Institution. Don’t let the serene surroundings fool you. This is a medium-security prison, established in 1966. Tong Fuk Correctional Institution was originally known as Tong Fuk Open Prison. Its name was officially changed on February 25, 2010. The institution holds adult male prisoners. It houses 925 inmates within its walls at 31 Ma Po Ping Road. If you were planning a visit, you could schedule a social visit between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. any day of the week except Wednesdays and public holidays. Be sure to arrive no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for security reasons and register at least 30 minutes before closing time. Official visits follow a similar schedule, running from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, excluding public holidays. The Tong Fuk Correctional Institution is just one of the 29 correctional facilities managed by the Correctional Services Department in Hong Kong. The CSD aims to not just confine, but also rehabilitate. They offer a wide array of programs. These programs focus on vocational training, education, and psychological support, to help inmates reintegrate into society.
