Did the vibrant colors of Tomoa Elementary School always grace this spot? No. Tomoa Elementary School has a rich history. It has seen many changes. Originally opened in 1968 with just 240 students, eight classrooms, and a temporary library, Tomoa Elementary has grown significantly. In 1970, a kindergarten was added and the library expanded. Just a few years later, twelve more classrooms were built to accommodate a booming student population of nearly 1,000. By 1979, the school housed over 1,100 students and a staff of 55. Decades later, the school underwent a major transformation. In June 2023, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a complete rebuild. Students temporarily relocated to the former Osceola Elementary campus while the new, state-of-the-art facility was constructed. The new Tomoa Elementary School, a $48 million project, opened in August 2024. The design draws inspiration from the natural beauty of nearby Tomoka State Park and the Tomoka River. The school’s blue and green color scheme reflects this connection. The new building boasts 45 classrooms, each with its own restroom, collaborative learning spaces, and a stunning media center featuring a 15.5-foot tree structure. It can now accommodate 836 students from pre-K through fifth grade. Remarkably, the rebuild preserved 59 existing trees, including some magnificent century-old oaks. Even the school’s iconic totem pole from 1979 found a new home in the redesigned space. The Tomoka Brave mascot also got a refresh, becoming historically accurate to the Timicua tribe and Chief Tomokie. Tomoa Elementary School stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education. It represents a blend of history, nature, and modern learning.
