Was Tollare gård always a school? Look around you. This grand estate, with its elegant white facade and gleaming copper roof, whispers tales of a time long before classrooms and textbooks. Tollare gård’s story begins in the early 1400s, a humble croft overlooking the shimmering Lännerstasundet. In 1403, it caught the eye of Stockholm’s mayor, Jöns Pedersson. He acquired the property, a sprawling 550 tunnland estate. Years passed, and Tollare gård, like a silent witness, observed the ebb and flow of history. It saw ownership pass from the hands of a grieving widow to a king’s generous reward to his admiral. It even survived the fiery wrath of the Russians in 1719, its 17th-century heart still beating strong. By the 19th century, Tollare gård had undergone a transformation, evolving from a simple croft to a stately manor. Anton Wilhelm Frestadius, an industrialist who made his fortune in the iron trade, added a second floor to the main building. Imagine, standing right here, he might have gazed out at the very same view, contemplating the success brought about by Stockholm’s booming railway. The year 1945 marked a new chapter for Tollare gård. It became home to the Tollare folk high school, a place of learning and growth. Though it has served as a beacon of education for decades, the echoes of its rich past linger in every brick and beam.
