“What could be studied here?” someone wonders aloud looking at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. This is not just another university. It is a place where the ocean’s mysteries meet technological innovation.
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology emerged in 2003. It was formed by merging Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine and Tokyo University of Fisheries. These two universities had rich histories of their own.
Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine was founded in 1875. Iwasaki Yatarō established it as Mitsubishi Nautical School. It became a national school in 1882. It was then named Tokyo Nautical School. In 1902, it moved to the Etchujima Campus. Later, in 1925, it became Tokyo Nautical College.
During World War II in 1945, three nautical colleges merged. They formed the Nautical College in Shimizu. In 1949, it became the University of Mercantile Marine. By 1957, the university returned to Tokyo. It was then renamed Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine.
Tokyo University of Fisheries began in 1888. It started as the Fishery Training Institute. The Japan Fisheries Association established it. In 1897, it became a national school. It was renamed Imperial Fisheries Institute. This institute was initially next to Tokyo Nautical College. In 1947, it moved to Yokosuka and became the First Imperial Fisheries Institute.
In 1949, the institute transformed into Tokyo University of Fisheries. By 1957, the university relocated to the Shinagawa Campus in Minato, Tokyo.
Today, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has two main campuses. The Shinagawa Campus is in Minato, Tokyo. The Etchujima Campus is in Kōtō, Tokyo.
The Faculty of Marine Science is at the Shinagawa Campus. It offers courses in ocean sciences, marine biosciences, and food science and technology. It also has courses in marine policy and culture.
The Faculty of Marine Technology is at the Etchujima Campus. Here, students study maritime systems engineering. They also study marine electronics and mechanical engineering. Logistics and information engineering are also taught.
For graduates, the university offers advanced courses. There is a one-year course for marine science graduates. Also, there is a half-year sea training course for marine technology graduates.
The Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology offers master’s and doctoral programs.
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the changing needs of the maritime world. Its history reflects Japan’s commitment to marine science and technology. The university remains a vital center for education and research. It shapes the future of our oceans and maritime industries.
