A century ago a Japanese government official met a member of the LDS Church. This chance encounter in the United States planted a seed. That seed grew into the magnificent Tokyo Japan Temple. Standing before you is the first temple built in Asia. It was dedicated in 1980 a testament to the faith and perseverance of Latter-day Saints in Japan.
The Tokyo Japan Temple’s compact design set a precedent for urban temples. It’s a remarkable achievement of architecture and faith. The temple’s serene atmosphere is enhanced by Japanese maples and bamboo. Two peaceful ponds and a waterfall add to its tranquility.
Before its construction many Japanese members journeyed to Hawaii for temple worship. Some even sold possessions to afford the trip. This highlights the dedication of early members. The temple’s construction fulfilled a prophecy made in 1949. Elder Matthew Cowley predicted temples would one day grace Japan.
The Tokyo Japan Temple wasn’t just built it was painstakingly renovated. From 2017 to 2022 the temple underwent extensive upgrades. These included mechanical and seismic improvements plus a beautiful redesign incorporating traditional Japanese design elements. A new annex now houses a visitors center and various facilities enhancing its ability to serve the community.
The original annex was replaced. This new four story building houses patron housing a FamilySearch Center and a distribution center. Additional chapels and classrooms further expand the temple’s capacity. The temple’s exterior is striking. 289 precast stone panels give it the appearance of light gray granite. The spire reaching towards the heavens is topped with an angel Moroni statue.
The interior is equally impressive. The design reflects Japanese culture. Shibui-style furniture evokes reverence. Lanterns inspired by traditional Shoji lanterns add warmth. Carpets feature kimono patterns. The Tokyo Japan Temple is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith resilience and cultural understanding.
