Across the Nihonbashi River, the Tokiwabashi beckons. It stands as a testament to time, connecting not just two districts, but centuries of history. The Tokiwabashi isn’t just one bridge, but two. A pedestrian stone bridge whispers tales of Edo Castle, while a newer road bridge hums with modern Tokyo life. Both share the elegant double-arch structure, a subtle visual echo across time. Tokiwabashi’s story begins shrouded in mystery. Its earliest mentions in Muromachi period documents speak of a bridge, possibly over the Kanda River, linked to the very first Edo Castle. Tokugawa Ieyasu’s grand reconstruction solidified its place, connecting the castle to the vital Ōshū Kaidō, the main road north. This wasn’t always Tokiwabashi. It bore many names. Ōhashi, a bustling sword market so notorious for fakes, it gave us the word “Ōhashi-mono,” meaning counterfeit. Later, it became the Asakusaguchi Bridge, gateway to the vibrant Asakusa entertainment district. The name Tokiwabashi, appearing after 1629, possibly stems from a poem favored by Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The original Tokiwabashi led directly to the Tokiwabashi Gate, a vital entrance to Edo Castle. This masugata-style gate, a strategic marvel of two angled gates and a central courtyard, provided formidable defense. The wooden bridge, however, proved vulnerable to Edo’s frequent fires and earthquakes, requiring repeated reconstruction. The Meiji Restoration brought change. The gate’s watchtower was dismantled, and in 1877, stones from its walls were repurposed to create the elegant double-arched stone bridge. This Tokiwabashi stands as the sole survivor of numerous stone bridges built in the early Meiji period. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 necessitated further changes. Tokyo’s plans for wider roads led to more of the Tokiwabashi Gate’s demolition, and the bridge itself was rebuilt and widened to accommodate automobiles, shifted slightly from its original location. Though the gate is gone, its remnants remain, a National Historic Site since 1928. Tokiwabashi, a quiet witness to Tokyo’s transformation, still stands. It’s a reminder of the layers of history beneath our feet, a bridge between the past and the present, forever linking two sides of the Nihonbashi River.
