“To Tei Wan Village is a very old fishing village.” That’s how one source describes this historic place. To Tei Wan also called “Earth Land Bay” is one of the Five Lan Nai Wan Villages. These villages share a collective history and a unique connection to Tai Tam Harbour.

Let’s step back in time to the early 20th century. Imagine the year is 1911. A census is taken. To Tei Wan is home to 54 people. Nearby, Tai Tam Tuk has 76 residents. Lan Nai Wan has a mere four. These numbers paint a picture of a small, close-knit community.

To Tei Wan and its sister villages played a crucial role during World War II. They served as vital defense stations. Villagers guarded Tai Tam Harbour against potential landings by the Japanese army. Even today, remnants of this period remain. Keep an eye out for relics of lookouts and pillboxes. These silent witnesses tell stories of a time when To Tei Wan stood as a protector.

The name Lan Nai Wan translates to “bad soil bay.” This refers to the sand and silt deposits accumulated by sea currents in the natural inner bay. Walking on it when wet is almost impossible.

Today, Section 7 of the Hong Kong Trail passes near To Tei Wan. This section stretches from Tai Tam Road to To Tei Wan. It traces the northern and western edges of Tai Tam Harbour. Hikers can enjoy stunning views. The trail offers glimpses into the area’s natural beauty.

Tai Tam Harbour itself is a significant geographical feature. It is a narrow inlet about 200 meters wide and 2 kilometers long. Its average depth is about 3 meters. The harbour connects to Tai Tam Bay. It is also located at the estuary of Tai Tam Tuk.

The inner bay of Tai Tam Harbour is a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1975. This designation recognizes the ecological importance of the area. Part of the estuary boasts a thriving mangrove ecosystem.
