A beacon stands sentinel at To Tau Tsui. It’s a small structure, you might think, for such a grand name. To Tau Tsui. Let the syllables roll off your tongue. To Tau Tsui. This isn’t just any cape. This is a place where the waters of the Tolo Channel churn and swirl against the unyielding rocks. The government, recognizing the importance of To Tau Tsui for navigation, planned a project here. In 2012, they announced their intention to construct a concrete landing and access facility. This facility at To Tau Tsui, a mere 30 square meters, would serve a vital purpose. It would provide safe access for maintenance staff to the To Tau Tsui Beacon. The project, scheduled for completion in October of that year, required affecting 793 square meters of foreshore and seabed at To Tau Tsui. A notice, detailing the extent of the area involved, appeared in the Government Gazette on February 17th. The notice and its plan were displayed near the site. Copies could also be obtained from the Survey and Mapping Office or viewed online at the Lands Department website. The public had a chance to voice their opinions. Anyone with an interest, right, or easement in the affected area could submit a written objection to the Director of Lands before April 17, 2012. To Tau Tsui, witness to countless sunrises and storms. To Tau Tsui, a point of reference for sailors and a haven for seabirds. To Tau Tsui, a small cape with a big story.
