What if I told you about a place known as “Hanging Hand Crag”? That place is Tiu Shau Ngam.
Welcome to Tiu Shau Ngam. This mountain in Hong Kong stands 589 metres tall. It is located north of Ma On Shan. Ma On Shan is the tallest mountain in this region.
Tiu Shau Ngam is part of the west ridge of The Hunch Backs. It is a well-known precipitous peak. Did you know it’s one of 16 “high-risk locations” for hikers in Hong Kong?
Its name comes from the resemblance of five consecutively higher peaks. These peaks look like the knuckles of a hand. That’s why it’s called “Hanging Hand Crag”.
Many routes can lead you to the top of Ma On Shan. One of the most popular is through Tiu Shau Ngam.
The hike up Tiu Shau Ngam is quite challenging. Some sections have steep inclines of about 40-50 degrees. Advanced hikers favor this route. It can be dangerous for beginners.
Hikers may need to use both hands to climb in some parts. The trail ascends along big rocks. Be careful where you step. If you are unsure about the route, do not continue. Safety first.
The first viewpoint offers an uninterrupted vista. You can see Ma On Shan and Wu Kai Sha. Tai Po area across the Shing Mun River is also visible. This spot is great for photos.
The trail goes up and down from one “knuckle” to the other. One section has ropes installed to help you climb.
Once the path veers to the right, you’re near Ma On Shan. But first, you must get through The Hunch Backs.
The highest point on Ma On Shan is easy to miss. It stands at 702m and gives a clear view of Tiu Shau Ngam’s knuckles.
There are several ways to exit the trail. You can take the right side trail at Ma On Au Junction. This leads to Pyramid Hills and then to Ngong Ping Plateau. You could also take the left side trail. It heads down to Shui Long Wo in Sai Kung.
Remember to bring enough water. Wear proper hiking apparel and good grip hiking shoes. Gloves can also help you with climbing.
