Marvelous Tiu Chung isn’t it? This uninhabited islet in Port Shelter Sai Kung boasts a geological wonder. It’s part of the Sai Kung Geological Park famous for its hexagonal columns. But the real star is the dramatic arch on the south side.
Tiu Chung also known as Jin Island resembles a goldfish. The arch known as the Goldfish Tail is a popular spot for kayakers. The best views however are from high above the coast.
Reaching Tiu Chung requires effort. There’s no regular service. You can kayak or charter a speedboat. Kayaking is challenging. It’s a two-hour journey from the nearest center. Docking at Goldfish Tail involves tricky maneuvering. This is not for beginners.
A speedboat is quicker. It takes about 20 minutes from Sai Kung town. However the general docking point is Tai Wong Wan. From there it’s a 1.5 to 2-hour hike to the Goldfish Tail.
Remember Tiu Chung has no refreshment points. Bring plenty of water and sun protection. Dehydration and heatstroke are serious risks. If you’re kayaking aim to return by 2 or 3 pm. Avoid strong winds.
Essential gear includes at least 1.5 liters of water wet shoes or hiking boots a hat and sunglasses sunscreen gloves for climbing and waterproof bags for your belongings and phone. Snacks and fruit are recommended.
The Goldfish Tail arch is magnificent. You can kayak through it. Speedboats can partially enter. The area behind is shallow. It’s best avoided by both kayaks and speedboats. Waves can get big be careful swimming or walking near the water. There’s no beach only rocks.
To reach the viewpoint go left from the arch. It involves bouldering. Gloves are a good idea. Some rocks are loose watch your footing. The trail is marked by red ribbons. It leads to barren rocks then down to the viewpoint. From here you see the Goldfish Tail perfectly. The best photos are taken sitting rather than standing.
From the viewpoint Tai Wong Wan is a 30-minute hike. Follow a trail marked with white and light green ribbons. Tai Wong Wan has a sandy beach ideal for snorkeling. This is also a common pick-up and drop-off point for speedboats. Tiu Chung is a hidden gem a true testament to nature’s artistry.
