Imagine a bell. A hanging bell. That’s what “Tiu Chung” means. We are here on Jin Island. It is also known as Tiu Chung Chau.
Tiu Chung Pai Teng is the peak on this island. The name “Hanging bell island” gives you a hint of its shape.
This island is part of the Sai Kung District. It shows us the natural beauty of Hong Kong.
Jin Island sits south of Kau Sai Chau. A narrow channel separates them. The highest point is 216 meters. The island covers 1.8 square kilometers.
Look east. You’ll spot the smaller Bay Islet. It is separated by the See Chau Mun channel.
The easterly winds and sea waves have shaped this island. We see sea caves, stacks and arches. These add to Jin Island’s charm.
One famous sea cave here is Kam Chung Ngam. It is better known as Goldfish Wagging Tail. From the top of this hill, you can get a perfect shot of the fish shape.
The Ung Kong Group Special Area protects part of Jin Island. It covers 176.8 hectares. It includes Basalt Island and Bluff Island. It also includes Wang Chau and some smaller islands. Kam Chung Ngam is also part of this protected area.
This area’s rocks are volcanic. They date back to the Cretaceous period.
There are no regular boat services to Jin Island. It is an uninhabited island. To visit Tiu Chung Pai Teng, you can kayak or charter a speedboat.
Kayaking here needs experience. Docking at Goldfish Tail means landing on rocks. The closest kayaking center is two hours away.
A speedboat from Sai Kung town center takes about 20 minutes. It generally costs 200 HKD per person.
Remember to bring enough water. Sun protection is also essential. Dehydration and heat stroke are real threats.
The arch of Goldfish Tail is iconic. You can kayak through it. Speedboats can enter part way, too if the wave isn’t too big.
The area behind the arch is shallow. Kayaks should be careful of rocks.
Waves can get big. Be careful swimming. There’s no beach. Only rocks where you can sit.
Gloves are useful for climbing. Some rocks are loose.
From the arch, a trail leads to the top of the mountain. This is where the best view of Goldfish Tail is. The head is to the top left. The tail spreads out beautifully.
The trail from the viewpoint to Tai Wong Wan takes 30 minutes. It’s a better place to snorkel. There’s a nice sandy beach here. Speedboats often pick up and drop off people here.
