Nestled near the Vienna Woods, the Tiroler Studentenheim, Altbau has been a home away from home for generations of students. It stands as a testament to the vision of those who saw a need and worked tirelessly to fulfill it. In the aftermath of World War II, Tyrolean students faced immense challenges finding affordable accommodation in Vienna. Recognizing this, a group of individuals formed the “Kuratorium Tiroler Studentenhilfe in Wien” in 1950. Their goal was simple: to provide support for these struggling students. Their first initiative, the “Jungtirolertisch” in 1952, offered meals at two local restaurants. The Tiroler Studentenheim, Altbau itself began in a grand villa in Neuwaldegg. This location, surrounded by greenery, was chosen specifically for its tranquil setting, offering respite from the bustling city. The first 14 students moved into the Tiroler Studentenheim, Altbau on November 15, 1952. The official opening followed shortly after on November 27th. The villa’s transformation into a student haven was largely due to generous donations. Even the furnishing came from contributions, including a substantial donation of wood. The initial capacity was quickly outgrown. This highlighted the pressing need for affordable student housing. Today, the Tiroler Studentenheim, Altbau continues its mission, housing around 130 students from North, East, and South Tyrol. It offers not just rooms but a vibrant community. Students can connect in shared kitchens, study in the library, make music, or relax on the rooftop terrace. The large garden, complete with a multi-purpose sports field and grill area, provides ample space for recreation and socializing. The Tiroler Studentenheim, Altbau fosters a collegial, family-like atmosphere, enriched by regular social events and activities. The proximity to the Vienna Woods provides opportunities for outdoor pursuits. The Tiroler Studentenheim, Altbau isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the power of community and the importance of supporting the next generation.
