What do you think about this place actually being named after a deep drain?

Welcome to Tin Mei Shan. This peak offers more than just a scenic view. It carries a history connected to the land itself. Tin Mei Shan is known locally as a high point. But its story starts from humble beginnings.

The name Shenzhen could date back to 1410 during the Ming dynasty. Locals called the drains in paddy fields Zhen. Tin Mei Shan was named after a deep drain within the area. Deep is Shen in Chinese. Zhen plus Shen became Shenzhen.

Shenzhen transformed from a village into a city in 1979. It became China’s first special economic zone. This was due to its proximity to Hong Kong. This attracted foreign investment and migrants. The city’s economy and population boomed. It became a hub for technology and trade.

Before Shenzhen became a special economic zone, it was mainly home to Hakka and Cantonese people. When the SEZ was established, it drew migrants from Guangdong. These migrants came from Hunan and other provinces too.

The city also worked to revive the Cantonese language. This is a part of Shenzhen’s culture. Even though Mandarin Chinese is widely spoken.

The competitive culture resulted in the term Shenzhen Speed. This refers to the fast construction of the tallest buildings. The term also means constant competition and high efficiency.

Tin Mei Shan stands as a testament to Shenzhen’s evolution. From a humble village to a global hub. Its name reminds us of the deep drain. The drain is a symbol of the area’s history and transformation. It is a great spot to reflect on Shenzhen’s past and future.
