Deep within the heart of Hong Kong, nestled between Leung King Estate and Shan King Estate, lies Tin Lo Shan. This unassuming peak, standing at 127 meters, holds a secret. It’s known locally as Por Lo Shan, which translates to Pineapple Mountain. Now, before your imagination runs wild with visions of tropical fruit cascading down its slopes, let me clarify. Tin Lo Shan earned its fruity nickname from the unique dark yellow rock formations. These formations resemble the crusty top of a Hong Kong pineapple bun. Some even say the hills look like the outer covering of a pineapple.

Tin Lo Shan offers more than just a quirky name. This peak boasts Hong Kong’s only natural canyon formation. This “Grand Canyon” of Hong Kong, as some call it, isn’t quite as grand as its American counterpart. However, it offers breathtaking views of sloping valleys and stunning rock formations. Be warned, the terrain is rugged. Those picturesque ridges and outcrops can be treacherous. The sandy ground is often slippery. So, sturdy footwear is essential for navigating Tin Lo Shan’s rocky paths.

Adding another layer of intrigue to Tin Lo Shan is its proximity to the Tsing Shan Firing Range. This area is occasionally used for military exercises by the People’s Liberation Army and police. So, before you embark on your adventure to Tin Lo Shan, a quick check of the Hong Kong Government press release website is advisable. This will ensure your visit doesn’t coincide with any live-fire practices. The schedules are typically released a week before the start of each month.

From the summit of Tin Lo Shan, the panoramic views are rewarding. You can see Castle Peak in the distance and numerous other trails snaking through the landscape. The hike itself is relatively easy, rated a 3 out of 10 in terms of difficulty. It’s a manageable climb, even for families with children. The trail offers a mixture of paved paths and natural, rocky terrain.

For a full day trip, consider extending your hike to include nearby Pak Nai beach. It’s a popular spot for sunset photography. Just be prepared for a potentially long wait for the number 33 minibus back to Yuen Long afterward. And don’t forget the mosquito repellent. Those buzzing critters can be quite enthusiastic, especially as you wait for transport. So, there you have it. Tin Lo Shan, a mountain of pineapples, canyons, and military exercises. It’s a unique Hong Kong experience, waiting to be explored.
