Did you ever hear of a pub rebuilt from tin? Right here stands The Tin Hut. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to resilience and a beacon of community spirit. The Tin Hut’s story begins in 1857 as the Tauherenikau Hotel. A grand establishment, it served the fledgling town of Greytown. This was just three years after Greytown’s founding as New Zealand’s oldest planned inland town. Tragedy struck in 1923. A devastating fire ripped through the Tauherenikau Hotel, reducing it to ashes. But the community’s thirst for connection wasn’t quenched. A temporary license was granted. Alcohol was sold from a premises across the road. Meanwhile, something remarkable was taking shape: The Tin Hut. It rose from the ashes, a phoenix of corrugated iron. The Tin Hut wasn’t just a temporary fix. It became a symbol of the town’s enduring spirit. Its tin walls have echoed with laughter, music, and countless stories for decades. The Tin Hut also played a unique role in the region’s history. It was one of several pubs along the Wairarapa rivers operating with “bush licenses.” These licenses catered to travelers stranded by floods. The Tin Hut was a haven, a warm light in the stormy darkness. For nearly a decade, The Tin Hut has housed the Cross Creek Blues Club. It became a hub for music lovers, hosting regular meetings and gigs. The club’s presence transformed The Tin Hut into a major musical attraction for the Wairarapa region. The Tin Hut, as we see it today, offers a chic, informal dining area. The bar provides warmth against winter chills. The beautiful garden is perfect for enjoying summer days. It’s a place where history and modern comfort intertwine.
