Rising majestically within Clear Water Bay Country Park sits Tin Ha Shan, a place where history and nature intertwine. Tin Ha Shan stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s rich past. Today we will explore the story behind this significant hill.

Tin Ha Shan, also known by its Chinese name 田下山, reaches a height of 273 meters. The hill offers panoramic views. It invites us to reflect on the events that unfolded here centuries ago.

Back in 1668, after the ban on human settlement in coastal areas was lifted, the region’s coastal defenses were strengthened. Twenty-one fortified mounds were established. These mounds were manned by army units along the border of Xin’an County. At least five of these were within present-day Hong Kong.

One of these key locations was at Fat Tong Mun. It was situated probably on what we know today as the Tin Ha Shan Peninsula. This strategic observation post was manned by ten soldiers. Their role was vital. They watched for potential threats and safeguarded the coastline.

Other fortified mounds included the Tuen Mun Mound. Some believe it stood on Castle Peak or Kau Keng Shan. It was manned by 50 soldiers. The Kowloon Mound on Lion Rock and the Tai Po Tau Mound northwest of Tai Po Old Market each had 30 soldiers. The Ma Tseuk Leng Mound stood between Sha Tau Kok and Fan Ling. It was manned by 50 men.

In 1682, these defense forces underwent reorganization. Detachments from the Green Standard Army took over. The forces now had reduced strength. Tin Ha Shan remained a crucial point in this network.

Imagine the lives of those soldiers stationed here. They endured long periods of watchfulness. They faced harsh weather. They played a critical role in protecting the region. Their presence is forever etched into the landscape of Tin Ha Shan.

Today, as you stand on Tin Ha Shan, you can appreciate its historical importance. The hill offers stunning views and a connection to the past. It serves as a reminder of the strategic decisions and human efforts. These shaped Hong Kong’s coastal defense.

So, take a moment to reflect on the stories of the soldiers. They once stood guard on this very spot. Their legacy lives on. It is embedded in the very soil of Tin Ha Shan. This place is a silent witness to history. It connects us to the past. It offers a unique perspective on the story of Hong Kong.
