This wasn’t just any ointment. The Tiger Balm story begins in 19th-century Rangoon Burma now Yangon Myanmar. Aw Chu Kin a herbalist from Xiamen China established a successful practice called Eng Aun Tong the Hall of Everlasting Peace. He passed his knowledge to his sons Boon Haw and Boon Par.

Boon Haw the gentle tiger and Boon Par the gentle leopard collaborated brilliantly. They perfected their father’s recipe creating Ban Kim Ewe Ten Thousand Golden Oils. It was a sensation. Boon Haw a shrewd businessman aggressively marketed the product. He secured deals with every Chinese shop in Rangoon ensuring its widespread success.

The brothers’ ingenuity led to the trademark Tiger Balm in 1909. By 1920 Boon Haw was the wealthiest Chinese man in Rangoon. He wasn’t content with local success. He expanded to Malaya and Singapore establishing larger factories. His custom-made car with a tiger’s head and a roaring horn became his trademark. He would distribute samples to villagers gaining even more customers.
