Feel the wind whip past your face. The Tied to Tide sculpture dances before you. This isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a living testament to Sydney Harbour’s powerful rhythms. Commissioned for the 2000 Sydney Olympics it’s a kinetic masterpiece.

Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie Crawford created this marvel. These award-winning artists are renowned for their site-specific kinetic works. Tied to Tide perfectly embodies their exploration of environmentally reactive movement. It makes you more aware of your place in time and space.

Look closely. Maritime orange ladders are hinged to hardwood beams. These beams are linked to floats bobbing in the water below. The wind makes the ladders swing. The tides raise and lower the beams. In calm waters they move gently. In choppy conditions their movements become sharp and sudden. It’s a captivating ballet of movement.

The sculpture’s location presents unique challenges. The constant exposure to marine conditions requires ongoing maintenance. This includes cleaning stainless steel elements. Bearings need lubrication. Protective coatings are applied to timber surfaces. Marine growth is regularly removed. Broken stainless steel elements are replaced. ICS Conservation undertakes annual maintenance and larger repairs. They even replaced bearings on the fiberglass counterweights. They also modified the sheathing on the structural timber elements. This prevents marine borer damage.

This isn’t just about metal and wood. It’s about nature’s relentless forces. The unpredictable wave action and wind create constant change. The sculpture’s movements are never exactly the same. It’s a unique experience each time you see it.

Tied to Tide is more than just an artwork. It’s a conversation between art nature and the built environment. The artists’ vision is a blend of engineering and environmental responsiveness. It highlights the continuous interplay of forces in Sydney Harbour. It’s a truly mesmerizing spectacle. You’ll remember its dance long after you leave.
