The Dalai Lama’s legacy in India lives on here. Welcome to the Tibetan Temple & Monastery in Sarnath! It stands as a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism in India. Many Tibetans fled to India after the Chinese invasion of Tibet, and the Dalai Lama sought refuge at this monastery after they were forced to leave their homes. The monastery’s history is relatively new, having been built in 1955, and its design reflects traditional Tibetan architectural style. The entrance is adorned with carvings of two lions, a sight that symbolizes strength and protection. You are right in front of the large open compound, and as you gaze ahead, you can admire the pale pink stupa that rises in the center. This stupa represents the gratitude Tibetans felt for the Indian government for granting the Dalai Lama asylum. The stupa, constructed in 1955, holds the memory of all those who fought for the independence of their homeland, keeping their sacrifices alive in the hearts of those who visit this temple. The temple sits just a few hundred metres from the ancient Buddhist complex in Sarnath. This site holds immense religious significance. The monastery houses a large image of Sakyamuni Buddha, another form of the Buddha, but in a resting position. The walls and ceilings of this temple are painted with vibrant Tibetan Buddhist murals. This temple, like many others, is home to prayer wheels. The sacred chants are inscribed on the paper scrolls within these wheels, and with each rotation, the chants are released. If you wish to participate in this ritual, move your right hand clockwise as you spin the wheel.
