Did the cornerstone of Thornhill Presbyterian Church foresee the vibrant community it would anchor? We stand before Thornhill Presbyterian Church, a testament to faith and fellowship. The current building, nestled on Centre Street across from Oakbank pond, began its journey in 1958. Imagine the scene: the cornerstone laid, a symbol of hope for the growing congregation. This wasn’t the first chapter in Thornhill Presbyterian’s story. Presbyterians had gathered in the area since 1811, initially sharing a space in Richmond Hill. Thornhill’s own pastorate formed in 1849. They repurposed a Methodist church on Yonge Street, a testament to resourcefulness. By 1879, fifty members, two elders, and sixty-six children filled the Sunday school. Fast forward to the Centre Street location. By December 1958, membership had surged to 215. By 1971, it more than doubled to 554. The church’s vision? “To discover, celebrate, and share God’s love.” This vision propelled expansion in 1997. A new fellowship hall, chapel, and office space were added, further strengthening community bonds. Thornhill Presbyterian Church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and a shared vision. It’s a place where people gather not just to worship, but to learn, serve, and play. Today, approximately 274 members and adherents from 132 households call this church home. They carry the torch of faith, ensuring the cornerstone’s promise continues to resonate through Thornhill.
