Andrew Thompson, a convict transported from Scotland, wouldn’t have imagined his name adorning a bustling corner of Sydney. Thompsons Corner, as it’s known today, stands at the intersection of Castle Hill and Pennant Hills Roads in West Pennant Hills. This crucial junction has witnessed centuries of change, evolving from a simple signal point to a thriving suburban hub. Thompsons Corner owes its name to Andrew Thompson, who received a land grant of 100 acres in 1796. This land was situated directly across from a vital signal station. Picture this: the governor’s horse-drawn carriage approaching Thompsons Corner, signaling his imminent return to Parramatta. The raising of a pennant at the station alerted the garrison, giving them time to prepare. Local tales add a colorful twist, suggesting the signal prompted soldiers to cease their revelry and tidy the streets after their antics during the governor’s absence. Thompsons Corner became a strategic point. In the 1890s, railway workers establishing the line from Strathfield to Hornsby set up camp and a supply depot right here. Later, during Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s tenure, the rhythmic sounds of timber sawing filled the air around Thompsons Corner. The corner also served as a crucial trading post along the route north. This bustling activity contributed to the establishment of Pennant Hills Public School in 1850, one of the first metropolitan schools under the newly formed Board of National Education. This school, initially named Pennant Hills Public School, later became Pennant Hills West, mirroring the area’s name change to West Pennant Hills. The original Pennant Hills Post Office, opened in 1867, was renamed West Pennant Hills in 1898. This was a consequence of the Pennant Hills Railway Station office adopting the Pennant Hills name two months earlier. From convict settlements to railway camps, from timber mills to a vital communication hub, Thompsons Corner has played a pivotal role in the development of West Pennant Hills. Today, it stands as a testament to the area’s rich and layered history, a place where echoes of the past resonate amidst the hustle and bustle of modern suburban life.
