Can you imagine a hospital funded by a £100,000 bequest? Right here, before us, stands the Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital. It was a gift from Thomas Walker, a prominent philanthropist who passed away in 1886. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council and a director of the Bank of New South Wales. The Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital opened its doors in 1893, gracing the banks of the Parramatta River in Concord West. It offered respite and recovery, not for the acutely ill, but for those convalescing. No infectious or terminal cases were admitted. Patients were referred from major hospitals like Royal Prince Alfred, St Vincent’s, and Sydney Hospital. Remarkably, their care was entirely free, thanks to Walker’s generous endowment, which covered stays of up to four weeks, and even two months if necessary. The hospital was designed by the renowned architect Sir John Sulman, after a design competition won by John Kirkpatrick. The final cost, however, ballooned to £150,000. The additional funds were lovingly contributed by Walker’s sister, Joanna, his daughter Eadith, and a close family friend, Anne Sulman. The main complex is a grand, symmetrical two-story structure, highlighted by an intricate three-story tower above the entrance. Inside, a magnificent vestibule and an entertainment hall capable of accommodating 300 people once hosted gatherings. Sandstone and wood paneling adorn the interiors and exteriors. The hospital grounds are equally impressive. Extensive gardens, sweeping paths, and carefully chosen plantings create a tranquil, park-like setting. Subsidiary buildings dot the landscape. These include stables, a gatehouse, and the charming Joanna Walker Memorial Children’s Convalescent Hospital, a separate structure built in 1894 to care for young convalescents. The hospital served its original purpose until World War II. In 1943, the military requisitioned it. The building then became the 3rd Australian Women’s Hospital, operated by the Red Cross until 1946. After the war, it reverted to convalescent care. By the 1970s, however, changing medical practices and social welfare programs lessened the need for this type of facility. In 1976, the hospital was entrusted to the NSW Health Commission. It was then transformed into the Rivendell Adolescent Unit, a rehabilitation center for emotionally disturbed teenagers. The Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital stands as a testament to philanthropy. Its story is woven into the fabric of Sydney’s history. It speaks of changing times and enduring community needs.
