Built in 1893 Third Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. It’s located in the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest Washington DC. This wasn’t just any church. It was the third oldest Black Baptist Church in the city. More importantly it was the oldest Black Baptist building still standing.

For decades Third Baptist Church served as a spiritual anchor for the community. It was a place of worship a place of refuge. Generations of families found solace and strength within its walls. The church’s legacy extended beyond Sunday services. It played a crucial role in the civil rights movement. It offered support and education to countless individuals.

The building itself is a marvel of late Victorian architecture. It’s a striking example of Late Gothic Revival style. The dark red brick exterior is meticulously maintained. A tall bell tower dominates the northeast corner. Lancet windows of varying sizes adorn the facade. Inside two rows of iron columns support the sanctuary floor. A full immersion baptismal pool was added in 1919. The original pews remain in the galleries.

In 2008 Third Baptist Church received a well-deserved honor. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition cemented its place in history. It acknowledged its architectural significance. It highlighted its importance to the community.

Sadly in January 2024 the building was sold. The Church of the Advent an Anglican church became its new owner. Third Baptist Church relocated to Prince George’s County Maryland. While the location changed the legacy remains. The spirit of Third Baptist Church continues to inspire. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of faith and the importance of community. The building itself a testament to a rich history. A history of resilience and spiritual growth. It will undoubtedly continue its mission in a new location.
