Painted on the side of a once-dilapidated housing tenement block, the Think Global Act Local Mural stands as a testament to community revitalization. The Think Global Act Local Mural, commissioned by the Sydney City Council in 1984, transformed this corner of Redfern. It rejuvenated the adjacent pocket park and breathed new life into the neighborhood. The mural showcases local architectural and environmental elements. The artists, David Humphries, Rodney Monk, Ashley Taylor, and Zig Moskwa, incorporated the scars of a demolished adjoining property. They also included grander local architecture. Familiar local characters, many of whom frequented the park, are also immortalized in the design. The Think Global Act Local Mural wasn’t just a beautification project. It earned the prestigious Sir John Sulman Prize in 1985. This award, conferred by the Art Gallery of NSW, recognized the artistic merit of the Public Art Squad’s work. It also acknowledged the power of art created for the people, by the people. Look closely at the Think Global Act Local Mural. You might recognize the names of the artists subtly incorporated into the newspaper held by a figure in the mural.
