Hidden beneath the bustling streets of Zurich lies Theater Stok. A captivating world of theatrical magic awaits. This isn’t just any theater. It’s a place steeped in history and brimming with untold stories.

Theater Stok found its home in 1971. Its location is in the former wine cellar of the Haus zum Krönli. This Baroque house was built in 1739. Before becoming a theater it served as a wine cellar. It even housed a city police depot for stolen bicycles and mopeds. Can you imagine the transformation? From bicycles to breathtaking performances?

The theater’s name has a fascinating origin. It originally reflected the founder’s surname Zbigniew Stok. Today STOK stands for something else entirely. It represents Solisten Tätige Originale and Konsequente. These words encapsulate the spirit of the theater itself. It offers a space for soloists active individuals originals and those committed to their craft.

Zbigniew Stok founded Theater Stok in 1970. The initial performances took place in a temporary location. This was the Beat-Raum used by ETH Zurich students. The space had to be completely reconfigured for every single show. A true testament to dedication and improvisation.

The collaboration of Zbigniew Stok and Erica Hännssler spanned two decades. They shaped the theater’s identity. From 1992 until her death in 2016 Hännssler continued leading the theater with Peter Doppelfeld. He now heads Theater Stok as the overall director. Their combined efforts created Theater Total. The theater was renamed from Zbigniew Stok’s Chamber Theatre in 1993.

Theater Stok’s stage is unique. There’s no traditional stage with a curtain. Instead performances occur on a raised platform. This is visible from three sides offering an intimate experience for audiences. The theater’s seating capacity ranges from 60 to 80 depending on the arrangement. The flexible layout allows for diverse productions.

The financial support of Theater Stok has been a challenge. Funding relies heavily on rental income. This is from both guest performances and its own productions. Since 1983 the city of Zurich provides a fluctuating subsidy. However this subsidy is currently threatened with cancellation. The future of this unique venue hangs in the balance. The theater is fighting to secure its future.

Today Theater Stok continues to thrive. While maintaining a commitment to its own productions it also welcomes guest artists. This ensures a vibrant and diverse program. The theater itself is a cultural gem. It’s a testament to resilience creativity and the enduring power of the performing arts.
