The Theater am Hechtplatz wasn’t always a theater. Initially it was conceived as a venue for Swiss cabaret. The city of Zurich loaned the building. It was meant to be a temporary second stage for the Schauspielhaus Zurich. But the Schauspielhaus faced financial struggles. The cabaret company also dissolved. The theater found a new purpose. It became a hub for diverse performances.

Singer-songwriters pantomimes and clowns have all entertained audiences here. For over fifty years the Zurich fairytale stage Zürcher Märchenbühne has called this place home. Generations of children have enjoyed its enchanting productions. The theater’s enduring popularity proves its cultural impact on the city.

The Theater am Hechtplatz has seen many changes. It underwent renovations in 1958-59 and again in 1987. These updates preserved its historical essence while ensuring it could continue to host performances. As of early 2025 another significant renovation is planned for 2026. This will modernize the building. It will improve audience facilities and ensure accessibility compliance. During renovations the theater will move its productions temporarily. The performances will be presented at the community center in Zurich Seefeld.
