Every other month, the theater hosts Open House Play and Win. This event is for young cabaret artists. The audience chooses a winner from up to eight participants. Like many small theaters in Vienna, the Theater am Alsergrund relies on subsidies.

In 2009, delayed city funding caused financial strain. Josef Hader, Erwin Steinhauer, and Michael Niavarani helped. Viktor Gernot also supported with benefit shows. The theater has since stabilized. Now, established artists book it for previews. They also use it for premieres.

Since 1996, the Theater am Alsergrund has hosted the Golden Kleinkunstnagel. This is a cabaret and small art competition. Andreas Hutter founded it. After Hutter’s death in 2010, Buchgraber and Brandl took over. In 2011, Cornelia Hutter became the director. She continues Hutter’s vision. The theater promotes newcomers. It also continues the Golden Kleinkunstnagel competition.
