“Exile” is a heavy word isn’t it? The Three Patriots Walk Plaque commemorates a group of French-Canadian prisoners. These men were exiled to Australia. They were far from their homeland.
The Three Patriots Walk Plaque stands as a testament to their struggles. It also honors their eventual contributions. It marks the spot where they disembarked. They arrived on their way to the Longbottom Stockade. This stockade was once located near present-day Concord Oval.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine the year is 1840. Picture a ship named the Buffalo. It arrives in Sydney. On board are 58 French-speaking Canadian prisoners. They were rebels from Lower Canada which is now Quebec. They had revolted against British rule. They sought greater democracy. Their uprising failed. As punishment they were transported to New South Wales.
These men weren’t common criminals. They were political prisoners. They fought for their beliefs. They were exiled for their actions. The monument recognizes their sacrifices.
Life at Longbottom Stockade was harsh. The prisoners faced poor conditions. They broke stones for Parramatta Road. Some collected oyster shells. These shells were turned into lime. Lime was needed for building.
But these exiles showed resilience. By 1842 they earned tickets-of-leave. This allowed them to work outside the stockade. They became clerks, gardeners and builders. Some even worked on the Victoria Barracks in Paddington.
Eventually pardons were granted. Most returned to Canada. However two died here. One named Joseph Marceau stayed. He married a local woman. He settled in Dapto. His descendants still live in Australia and New Zealand.
The Three Patriots Walk Plaque was unveiled in 1970. Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau dedicated it. He marked the 130th anniversary of their arrival. It recognized their role in the evolution of self-governing nations.
Originally the monument was in Cabarita Park. It was moved to Bayview Park. This new location is closer to the original wharf. The wharf is where the exiles first set foot on Australian soil.
