Founded in 1979 The Theatre Centre began as a cooperative of five independent theatre companies. Buddies in Bad Times Autumn Leaf Theatre AKA Performance Interface Necessary Angel and Nightwood Theatre joined forces. They craved a shared space for creation rehearsal and performance. Their ambitious goal was to nurture artists champion new works and explore innovative theatrical approaches.

The Theatre Centre quickly became a vital hub. It fostered a collaborative environment. The R&D Research and Development program launched in 1984. This program became a leading force in theatrical exploration in Toronto. It supported countless artists companies and productions. Jennifer Tarver Chris Leavins and Sarah Garton Stanley are just a few notable names among many who benefited from this initiative.

In 2004 The Theatre Centre’s Residency Program replaced R&D. This two-year program provides artists with space funding and mentorship. It helps artists transform ideas into finished productions.
